Transcendental Meditation

Overview

How can I get the benfits of Transcendental Meditation? The essence of any meditation is the attempt to restrict awareness to a single unchanging source of stimulation for a definite period of time.

Transcendental meditation or “TM” is not taught on this site because TM is trademarked. That doesn’t mean we can’t teach you a virtually identical method.

The TM method is a mantra meditation.

Lets compare the TM method and the mantra meditations listed on meditation-methods.com, e.g. Japa Meditation. TM and the mantra method taught here both involve chanting or the saying of mantras or sounds. TM and the mantra method here both use relaxation to induce the meditation experience. TM and the mantra method here both use the mantras of “Ahh” and “Om”. The difference between the two is that TM has a few more sounds that you can chant.

But before you invest in a costly meditation retreat or seminar promising to teach you the secretive TM methods, consider a second opinion.

According to Robert Ornstein’s definitive text, “A Psychology of Consciousness”, “[Transcendental Meditation] is in fact the most elemental and least transcendent form of meditation of all. Indeed, Transcendental Meditation, quite popular in the U.S. and Western Europe, has offered many their first idea of what these traditions (meditation) are all about --- unfortunately, too often in the form of a … guru and a highly developed slick brochure promotion program of scientific [validation].”

Be cautious of TM programs. They are highly commercialized and over hyped, perhaps for the sake of gaining new clients. I believe learning how to meditate should be easy and inexpensive.

What if I want to learn meditation on a retreat? Learning meditation by personally interacting with experts is a very valuable experience and I highly recommend it. However, there are many low-cost options when it comes to learning meditation. TM is not your only option. Consider taking part in a free meditation at a local Buddhist temple, for example. They are easy to find.

If you are adamant about learning a transcendental-like meditation

If you are adamant about learning a TM-like meditation without the TM-like price, I recommend you sample the Japa Meditation page found by clicking the link below. You’ll find free, step-by-step, written instructions and an audio walk-through of the meditation.
